How to extend the residence permit in Estonia

Many people will face the necessity to extend their residence permit in the coming future. The same conditions would have to be met like in the initial proceedings if you are applying on the same basis of course. It is also possible to apply on a different basis should it be more suitable, for example based on "for settling permanently", read more HERE .

There are some important aspects to consider when planning for the extension.

Firstly, it is recommended to apply at least 3 months before the end of the term of your residence permit as the time of proceedings is 2 months as the 2 month period can always be prolonged by the Police and Border Guard and there could also be unforeseen issues should you leave the application to last minute. You can send all documents online signed digitally. It is recommended to go to the Police Station to take a new photo and give a signature sample (these are required) but these can also be sent online provided they meet the requirements.

Secondly, the extended period can be up to 10 years.

Thirdly, in the proceedings the Police will assess if you have met the TRP conditions during the current period - for example if you have been paid the required salary or if your TRP is based on business, then how your business is really doing. Also very importantly they will look if you have indeed moved to Estonia and actually live here with a registered residence (which is the aim of the residence permit) If the conditions are not met or have not been met then it could pose a problem.

In the proceedings you often get questions about how you have settled, how do you spend your free time and they can also check your social media profiles. It helps if you can show that you have taken an interest towards the Estonian life - for example taken some course in language. Sometimes the questions can even be intimidating but usually there is no cause for alarm if you give open and honest answers, the Police are just doing their job.

We recommend starting the proceedings well in advance and we would be happy to do all the preparatory work and advise you all the way.
