What happens to your residence permit when you get fired?

In light of recent YOLO Group mass layoffs, we thought to touch the topic of what next, from a legal point of view.

Your residence permit is tied to your specific employer. When your employment is terminated then the employer also has the obligation to notify the Police and Border Guard. Some do not do it but we have to assume that in this case it will be done.

Even if your permit still has time until expiry, the Police and Border Guard can start the proceedings to terminate the permit.

In our experience they do not rush to do it. They might contact you and ask about your plans and if you are seeking new employment. So there is a grace period but this is unofficial - could happen, could not happen.

If you are seeking new employment then we recommend to do it as soon as possible, be proactive with the Police and Border Guard and show them you are searching for employment. Upon finding it, inform them about it and file for a new employment based TRP as soon as possible.
